Questions arise when Senator Stoddard (James Stewart) attends the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) in a small Western town. Flashing back, we learn Doniphon saved Stoddard, then a lawyer, when he was roughed up by a crew of outlaws terrorizing the town, led by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). As the territory's safety hung in the balance, Doniphon and Stoddard, two of the only people standing up to him, proved to be very important, but different, foes to Valance.

The Rev. Shay moves out West to set up his new home in Montana so that he can spread God's word. But when his wife, Raysha, leaves him for another man -- in part because she wants to return to Philadelphia -- the reverend decides to replace his spiritual ways with a gun. After shooting down his wife and her lover, he battles a landowner intent on keeping all the town's water for himself. But his deadly ways make him yearn for a belief in God again.

As McLintock tries to juggle his various adversaries, his wife, who left him two years previously, suddenly returns. But she isn't interested in her husband -- she wants custody of their daughter.
