After being fired from her beloved role as head coach of a first-class cheerleading team, Courteney Potter is ready to stage the ultimate comeback. Just one championship shy of becoming the winningest college cheer coach ever, she takes a new job in a small Southern town where she recruits a group of lovable misfits in the hopes of training them to become a competitive squad. But getting this collection of underdogs to the nationals in the highly competitive world of junior college cheer might just be Courteney's toughest job yet.
The Buttons experience the cheerleading championships, competing on cheer's biggest stage; as the ragtag team attempts to win the title, they first must overcome not only Sammy Davis Senior Jr. College, but a surprising foe from Courtney's past.
Courteney must cut one of her Buttons from making mat at Daytona; each of the team shares why Daytona is so important, but Courteney operates with her head over her heart and, after grueling tryouts, renders a heartbreaking decision.
Now that they've qualified for Daytona, Courtney must raise the money to get there and recruit new cheerleaders to give them a shot at winning; in order to do so, she must make a deal with the Buttonmeister himself, Augustus Schlimpf.
Having missed cheer camp, the team must submit a skills tape in order to qualify for Daytona, but the headwinds are against Courtney, as making the tape falls right in the middle of finals week at Huddleston.
